High school seniors receive $1,500 to pursue trades careers

July 5, 2021 - Both Logan Prochnow and Lane Braun knew early on in their lives that trade school would be on the horizon. Home Builders Care of F-M Foundation leaders recognized that passion, awarding each student $1,500 to pursue hands-on careers.

More about Logan

Throughout Logan’s life, he was continually building something.

As a sophomore at Central Cass High School, he built a playhouse for his sister. As a senior, he experienced two opportunities in the construction field: shadowing a carpenter at a small company and enrolling in the S.T.E.M. class at his school which allows for career readiness. He chose architecture and construction management as his areas of study. While in the class he was able to help build an outdoor campfire ring in his hometown.

A recent Central Cass graduate, Logan plans to attend North Dakota State College of Science and major in construction management technology. His goal is to find a good job after graduation, gain experience and possibly own a company. After about 25 years, he would love to become a construction teacher at a high school and teach new generations about the way of the craft.

Logan’s parents are Chris and Erin Prochnow from Casselton, N.D.

More about Lane

Lane Braun of Litchville, N.D., has always known that he would go to a trade school. His parents, Eric and Holly said, “He told us all the time he would not like to sit in an office all day.”

When Lane was little, he always wanted to help his dad with hands-on projects. The Brauns started talking about careers a couple of years ago and Lane eventually settled on HVAC. He likes learning how things work. 

Lane has some experience in the construction field, assisting the past two summers as a production welder at Kustom Machine, Inc.  but has not yet worked in the HVAC industry.

His short-term goal is to be hired with an established HVAC company right out of college. After 5-10 years of gaining knowledge and skills, would like to start his own HVAC business.

Lane graduated from LaMoure Public High School in May and has applied and been accepted to the heating, ventilation and air conditioning program at North Dakota State College of Science.

Home Builders Care of Fargo-Moorhead Foundation’s scholarship application for high school students are generally available at the end of March each year. Scholarship amounts will be awarded at a $500 minimum. Applicants must plan to enroll in residential construction trades or a related field (plumbing, electrical, building construction technology, construction management, heating/air conditioning, etc.) at Minnesota State Community and Technical College-Moorhead or North Dakota State College of Science-Wahpeton.
